What to say and,not to say, when someone tells you they have cancer

"I've just been diagnosed with cancer."
  1. You are strong, you got this.

  2. What can I do?

  3. Do not offer advice on treatment

Instead, say this . . .

  1. I'm so sorry!

  2. I will check in with you to see what you need. (And actually do it). Take them dinner, walk their dog, clean their house, sit and just listen to them.

  3. I will support whatever treatment you decide is best for you.
